Consumer brand

Gerlach – printed materials and packaging

Four product catalogues in Polish and English, an icon set, five types of brochures, the cover of a book on the brand's history and a packaging series for Gerlach, a brand trading since 1760.

Context

Gerlach makes knives, cutlery, pots and kitchen accessories, as well as garden tools. The brand has been around since 1760 and is considered the oldest in Poland.

We designed a full set of printed materials for it: four product catalogues, each in Polish and English, five types of brochures and the cover of a book on the brand's history. A set of product icons was created for the catalogues, and alongside print came packaging, including a box for a cookware set and boxes for food containers.

Catalogues

Four catalogues in two languages

Each product series got its own spread: packshots on a white background, a short description and a table of elements. We set the series names, such as Retro, Onda or Bon Ton Kittens, as large page titles.

Below, the cover of the kitchen catalogue and the Retro series spread. Further down, the English version: a burgundy marbled endpaper, the table of contents and Bon Ton Kittens, a children's cutlery series.

Icon set

Pictograms for elements and features

We designed a set of icons for the catalogues. The pictograms mark the elements of each series, from a fork to a teaspoon, and product features such as the country of manufacture or a 25-year guarantee. The same marks return in tables and on product pages, so the series are easy to compare without reading through the descriptions.

The garden tools catalogue uses the same layout with a different lead colour. Next to the cover, the premium wide trowel page; below it, a green endpaper, the table of contents and the spade and shovel pages.

The book

A black cover with a silver title

“Historia w stali wykuta” (‘A history forged in steel’) is a book about the brand's past. Another studio prepared the typesetting; our part was the cover, designed by Agnieszka Wróblewska.

The title is hot-stamped in silver foil on black cloth. Thin lines run through the letters like traces of a blade, and the outline of a knife hides among them. Silver on black points to what Gerlach has been known for over 260 years: good knives made of good steel.

Brochures and packaging

Five brochures and a box series

Beyond the catalogues we designed five types of brochures, including a folded leaflet with pots and pans. We also designed packaging: a box for the Prestige Plus cookware set and a series of boxes for the Smart, Ambiente and Superior food containers.

The container boxes are burgundy with white typography: we spaced the letters of each name along thin lines. The capacities sit right on the sides, from 0.3 l in the Smart set to the one-litre Superior.

Brand manual – what it is, what it contains and what it costs

A brand manual is the instruction manual for your logo – mark versions, clear space, colours, typography, examples of incorrect use. We explain what it should contain, how it differs from a brand book and what it costs.
