# What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

GEO is the optimisation of a website for generative AI search – ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini – so the models cite your company as a source in their answers.

When a customer asks ChatGPT "which studio would you recommend to build an app?", the model composes its answer from sources it trusts. GEO works to put you among those sources.

What works: content accessible to AI crawlers (robots.txt, full HTML without requiring JavaScript), direct answers at the start of sections, definitions and data that are easy to quote, freshness (models clearly prefer recently updated content), consistent company information across sources (website, directories, LinkedIn) and signals of expertise – named authors, sources, specifics instead of generalities.

GEO does not replace SEO – classic SEO remains the foundation. It is a new layer on the same foundation, and one of the pillars this website was built on.
