# What is Digital accessibility (WCAG)?

Digital accessibility means designing products everyone can use – including people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive disabilities. WCAG is the international standard of accessibility guidelines.

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) defines conformance levels A, AA and AAA; the market and legal standard is **AA**. In practice this means: sufficient text contrast, keyboard operability, alternative descriptions for images, readable forms with error messages, content intelligible to screen readers.

Since June 2025 the European Accessibility Act (EAA) has extended accessibility requirements to a large share of digital services in the EU – including e-commerce. Accessibility has moved from goodwill to obligation.

It is worth doing for better reasons than fear: accessible products are better for everyone (readability, keyboard, clear messaging) and more visible to search engines, which "read" a page much like a screen reader does.
